NOW Music knöpft sich mit dem NOW Yearbook Extra 1991 genau dieses Jahr nochmal vor und liefert mit satten 58 Tracks auf drei CDs ein nostalgisches Feuerwerk für Pop-Fans – von chartdominierenden Giganten bis hin zu versteckten Compilation-Schätzen.
CD 1 startet mit einem Paukenschlag: Queens monumentales „Innuendo“ setzt den Ton für eine Zeitreise zwischen Superstars und unterschätzten Perlen. Die Pet Shop Boys, OMD und Simply Red bringen uns zurück in die Tage, als Synthesizer-Hymnen und Soul-Pop ganz oben auf der Playlist standen. Aber auch jene Songs, die man fast vergessen hätte – von Julee Cruises hypnotischem „Twin Peaks“-Soundtrack bis hin zu Praise und Oleta Adams – dürfen hier glänzen. Kylie und Keith Washington beenden die erste Runde im romantischen Duett, als hätten sie nie aufgehört, im Radio zu laufen.
CD 2 setzt auf Gänsehaut und Gitarren: Brian May zeigt solo, wie Queen’scher Bombast auch allein funktioniert, während Cher, Roxette und Chris Rea das Pop-Rock-Herz bedienen. Indie- und Alternative-Klänge von James, The Mock Turtles oder Electronic runden das Bild ab und erinnern an eine Ära, in der britische Gitarrenmusik plötzlich wieder cool wurde. Und dann CD 3 – die Tanzfläche ruft: Mit Dancefloor-Krachern von C+C Music Factory, Martika, Banderas und dem zweiten Pet Shop Boys-Track ist der Sprung in die Clubs von damals nur ein Knopfdruck entfernt. Take That geben ihr frühes Stelldichein, und selbst Monty Python dürfen zum Schluss nochmal gute Laune versprühen.
